The GLOW mentoring and coaching project is funded by Essex County Council’s Family Innovation Fund (FIF)
Mentoring and coaching will be targeted at those individuals and families with “additional” needs “who would benefit from or who require extra help to improve education, parenting and/or behaviour, or to meet specific health or emotional needs to improve material situation”. As a result of the early interventions provided, Essex County Council expect there to be increased family stability and resilience that will enable children, young people and parents/carers to function effectively as individuals and as a happy and healthy family unit within their communities. They will achieve better demonstrable short and long term outcomes and prevent escalation to, and demand on, statutory services.
Interventions will enable the development of the skills needed for children, young people and parents/carers to be resilient. Commissioning analysis determined three key characteristics that lead to family instability and these are; Negative behaviour; Poor relationships and Social isolation, defined as:
- Negative Behaviour – on the part of children and young people – where the parent/carer would benefit from an intervention to stop disruption to family stability whilst ensuring the facilitation of developing parenting skills and resilience are enabled;
- Risky Behaviours – that are either emotionally and/or physically harmful by nature including sex, drugs, alcohol, gang and crime related behaviours on the part of children and young people;
- Aggressive Behaviours – that are verbal and physical on the part of children, young people, parents/carers, and that are emotionally or physically harmful but have not been the focus of any intervention by statutory agencies and/or specialist services.
The service will work with:
- Individuals and families – where this will deliver the best outcome for the person referred for an intervention.
- Children, young people and parents/carers, where identified as being socially isolated, will be supported to develop a connectedness and/or be supported to become active participants through volunteering and activities in their local communities and able to access local support systems;
- Where appropriate peer groups will be encouraged by way of enabling long term sustainability.
Scope of the Project
Interventions will be timely enough to prevent a problem or situation getting worse and can be
a) early in life or
b) early in a problem or
c) both of the aforementioned.
There will be provision for work in the context of individual one to one; sibling; parent/carer(s) and child; whole family support, including separated families where both parents are involved with the child/young person.
Interventions will enable the development of individuals’ soft and hard skills and deliver demonstrable short and long term outcomes, including the resilience to maximise independence from services after the intervention has occurred.
The Interventions to be Delivered
Delivery will be Coaching (14+ years) and Mentoring (8+ years) interventions for children and young people and parents/carers with the primary purpose of improving outcomes by reducing and/or preventing:
- Negative behaviour that impacts parenting the dynamic of a family
- Risky behaviours that lead to poor physical and emotional outcomes
- Aggressive behaviours that leads to violence
- The breakdown of parental or family relationships
- Social isolation
An intervention will be provided where it has been identified that behaviours and relationships are resulting in one or more of the following:
- The dynamics of the family are adversely affected by an individual member of the family;
- The dynamics of the family are adversely affected by the parental carer/relationship within the family;
- That children and young people and/or parents/carers are displaying early signs of low level risky, negative or aggressive behaviours that would impacting the dynamics of the family;
- An individual is feeling disconnected from local networks of support and activity and is feeling isolated.
Coaching – is outcome focussed and is a method of helping others to improve, develop, learn new skills, find personal success, achieve aims and to manage life change and personal challenges though the processes of questioning and reflection. Coaching commonly addresses attitudes, behaviours, and knowledge, as well as skills. Coaches will provide opportunity for individuals to think about their options, progress and success. Coaches are qualified or suitably trained/experienced practitioners and would normally receive payment for providing an intervention.
Mentoring – is different to coaching in that a mentor is a guide or a positive role model who can help the mentee to find the right direction and who can help them to develop solutions to issues and is outcome focussed. Mentors will usually rely upon having had similar experiences to gain an empathy with the mentee and an understanding of their issues. Mentoring provides the individual with an opportunity to think about options, progress and success. Mentors have regular and frequent contact with mentees and where young people are concerned they may be matched based on a mutual interest in a particular activity to support the young person achieve their outcomes.
Mentors are usually volunteers but will be trained to a high standard through a robust evidenced based programme delivered in partnership with Essex Community Development.
Peer Groups – support people from a similar age group, background, culture and/or social status and educate and inform each other about a wide range of issues. The rationale behind peer education is that peers can be a trusted and credible source of information. They share similar experiences and social norms and are therefore better placed to provide relevant, meaningful, explicit and honest information. Peer groups are a good way to develop community connectedness, reduce isolation and support the sustainability of outcomes.
The average duration of any intervention should be no more than twelve weeks beyond which professional consideration must be given to the next appropriate steps.
Operational delivery will take place in a variety of locations to suit the nature of the intervention and the individual and families concerned and might include: the family home; children’s centres; schools; youth centres and other suitable community venues etc.
Consent and Confidentiality
Service user information is kept confidential and shared with consent, except where there is a perceived or actual risk of harm which precludes this.
The consent received as a result of signing the Request for Early Intervention Support form details the circumstances under which information will be shared.
